Russ!

Last weekend my friend Russ from NYC came to visit Rene and me. He was my Bible study leader and a fellow youth leader, but last August he quit his job as a lawyer in NYC and started traveling around the world. He most recently went to Sicily to pick lemons, went up to Switzerland to a Christian retreat center, and then came by train to Leiden to visit us!

We had a great time showing Russ around Leiden. He'd already been to Amsterdam to visit another friend and didn't like it so much, so I felt it my responsibility to impress Russ with Leiden so he'd have a better impression of The Netherlands! Since last Friday was beautiful weather, we went to Scheveningen, a beach town that's part of The Hague, and then walked around The Hague until we met Rene after work for Korean food (Russ likes Korean food so I wasn't about to pass up an opportunity to get me some!).

On Saturday we took Russ to the Keukenhof, which is a giant botanical garden full of tulips (very Dutch!) There we learned the the word "yankees" come from the Dutch boys names "Jan" and "Kees" (pronounced something like yon-kayz together)! I've been joking that we're going to name our firstborn son "Jan Kees" in tribute to the Bronx Bombers!

Sunday after church we took a boat tour of Leiden and went to the Botanical gardens here at Leiden University- it was free museum weekend so we got in free! Later that evening Rene and Russ cycled to Katwijk (another beach town), but I stayed home with a belly ache.

Monday Russ and I got bagels at a popular coffee shop here in Leiden and then walked around town before taking him to Schiphol airport for his flight to London.

It was really nice have a visitor here! Now if I could only convince my parents to come over . . . :)

awww, I miss you, and Rene, and Russ!
hee hee, I loved the pictures you took of Ducky, especially when it was in the daffodils (eh? where'd Ducky go?!) and when Russ was chasing the duck with Ducky.
