Two girls in our church youth group were in their school play, which ran last week. It was a Dutch adaptation of a German play, "Der Besuch der alten Dame," or, "The Visit" in English. The Dutch translation, "Het bezoek van de oude dame" was also modified to take place in Oegstgeest, the town where the school is located.
It was really great to get to see the girls in action and to go support them, but the problem with it being in Dutch was that I had a really hard time following what was going on. Even though my Dutch listening and comprehension skills keep getting better and better, it was all I could do just to figure out what the overarching storyline was, nevermind catching the one-liner jokes and dialogue. I think any play would still be difficult for me to understand, but add on top of that students who talk really quickly and don't always project properly, and it was almost impossible for me to follow!
Thankfully Rene had a hard to time understanding the dialogue too so I didn't feel quite so bad!
