Out on my own

Rene started work yesterday, and that means I have to venture out into the unknown all by myself! It's really scary, and I don't know why it's so flustering to me! I lived in New York City for goodness sakes! But then again, I spoke the language there, and the streets are all aligned in a grid, and I didn't have to figure out the bicycle traffic rules. But I'm proud of myself! I haven't gotten lost yet, and I've gotten through several tricky intersections without getting run over by a car or moped or another cyclist!

In any case, we got our new refrigerator and oven yesterday! We had to wait 12 hours to plug in the fridge, so today was the first day I got to use it but it's so roomy wonderful compared to the tiny little one we had before! And the oven needed a special part to hook it up to the gas line that we didn't have, so I got it today along with the wrench I needed and hooked it all up myself! With Teflon tape and everything! And the most important thing of all: it doesn't leak gas and it cooks stuff!

Tonight was our first night that our home fellowship group (called a "life group" here) met. We had a potluck dinner (I made baked nachos in my new oven!) and I made a new friend! At least I think so! Her name is Rosie and she's from the UK and she also moved here because of a boy (those darn boys!) and we're meeting tomorrow morning to go to the market together!

I hope that once we get settled and have furniture that perhaps Rene and I could host a fellowship group here. I haven't entirely talked it over with Rene yet, but I feel like maybe we're called to do this eventually. I would like to be able to be hospitable to those who are students and new to the city and often alone here. Not to say that I'm in a much better position, but we can get exasperated and frustrated and confused together! I don't know! We'll see!

I know I promised to write all about Mallorca, and I really want to, but I just haven't had the time to sit down and get all the pictures on the computer and write out our adventures! But I promise I will!! As soon as I can! I've been so busy organizing our apartment a bit and figuring out how to cycle to the grocery store and generally getting things in order that I feel like I haven't stopped since we got back from Spain! But it's really nice to stay busy- I don't have much time to be homesick or bored, which is really great!

Oh, but one last thing- I tried to get a library card at the Leiden Public Library, but it was € 28!! Who charges a yearly fee for a public library card?!?! And I didn't have the cash on me so I'll have to go back later to pay for it if I decide it's worth it- I really wanted to take out some children's books in Dutch to help me expand my vocabulary. But we'll see . . . €28?

Ok, gotta get to bed so I can be up in time to meet Rosie! Yay! A friend!
