Midsummer's night at the botanic garden

Last Sunday was not only Father's Day, but also the first day of Summer! To celebrate, the Hortus Botanicus at Leiden University had a big todo, including live music, wine tasting, and aroma smelling seminars. They also had baby photographs being taken on enormous lily pads in one of the greenhouses. Rene and I forgot to bring our camera, but here's a photo from the University website!

It was also a big night for the Reuzenaronskelk (also known as the "penis plant"). The plant only blooms once every so many years, and when it does, it smells like rotting meat! The gardens advertised that it might bloom that night, but when we got there, we found out that it was still a few days from blooming. In fact, it bloomed last night! I'm actually pretty glad I wasn't there for it!
